Welcome to the Amana Colonies Iowa.

The Historic Amana Colonies of Iowa are located on exit 225 off of Interstate 80, West of Iowa City and East of Des Moines. The Amana Colonies were founded 150 years ago, are a National Historic Landmark and are visited by people from all over the United States. The Colonies sit in the Iowa River valley amongst the scenic rolling hills and the fertile soil that drew the settlers here over 150 years ago.

Originally, all land and buildings were owned by the community. Families were assigned living quarters, and each person over school age worked at assigned tasks in the kitchens, fields, factories or shops. In 1932, the people voted to end the communal way of life. Today, many of the businesses in the Amana Colonies are independently owned and operated.

Today, the Amana Colonies are a great destination to visit and see the original architecture, shop for antiques, experience wine tasting and visit Millstream, Iowa's oldest micro-brewery. You will find unique hand made gifts and quality home furnishings that you could pass down through the generations. You can spend the day at museums and in a historic general store. You will also experience some mouthwatering home cooking in the many restaurants.
